care.UNIT AND HOSPITAL SUMMARY:5 South is a cardiac progressive
care unit or a telemetry unit. We have 32 beds with 28 semi-private
rooms and 4 private rooms. Each patient has a telemetry monitor
that they are required to wear at all times while on the unit. 5
South thrives on teamwork, kindness, and respect from all team
members. We include the family in patient care and

Wayne State's University School of Medicine.GENERAL SUMMARY:The
Clinical Nurse Manager is an experienced leader responsible for
managing assigned areas and services and supervising assigned
patient care staff to promote the creation of a center of
excellence for staff recruitment and retention and clinical and
business outcomes. The Nurse Manager is responsible to ensure safe
and effective delivery of patient care and clinical outcomes,
compliance with regulatory, administrative and clinical standards,
and policies and procedures. The Nurse Manager serves as a chief
retention and safety officer. He/she ensures that safety and
quality standards are upheld by effective use of data and
technology to make decisions and proactively mitigates unnecessary
risks for his/her area of responsibility. The Nurse Manager creates
and ensures a desirable, safe work environment that enables the
organization to meet or exceed its mission and goals. He/she models
the way to foster communication and collaboration with physicians,
staff, patients and other departments. Role specific competencies,
responsibilities, roles and functions are based on the Professional
Practice Model. This position reports to the Director of Nursing or
above.AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:Under general direction, maintains
24-hour responsibility and accountability for providing leadership
and management of a designated patient care unit which promotes
quality nursing care, cost-effective use of resources and
professional growth for nursing staff. Promotes a Patient Family
Centered Care Culture.ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Manages the Human Resources of the unit to ensure the
achievement of Department Goals including employee satisfaction,
staff retention, and performance.
- Assists in the development and maintains operations of the unit
within fiscal and productivity guidelines as set forth by annual
budgetary process.
- Demonstrates commitment to clinical quality while focusing on
quality clinical outcomes.
- Collaborates with care management, the medical staff, and the
interdisciplinary team to promote smooth, timely, and efficient
patient throughput.
- Ensures consistent Unit Council meetings are led by staff
nurses.
- Maintains materials and resources for staff.
- Assures all new RN hires attend GN residency class.
- Meets with all new hires 1:1 in first the week of department
orientation; limits preceptors for each new hire and assures
preceptor documentation is timely.
- Develops and achieves annual department goals that support the
Mission and Vision.
- Demonstrates effective leadership and professional development
including attendance at leadership development classes.
- Upholds professional standards of care by demonstrating
leadership skills and a high level of clinical knowledge while
striving to achieve the system Mission and Vision.
- Participates in activities that promote good will and/or
exposure in the community.
- Seeks ongoing learning experiences in order to keep current
with practice and promote self-growth.
- Maintains current nursing license and any additional
VISA's/Certifications.
- Demonstrates Customer Focus, Patient Experience, and Patient
and Family Centered Care.
- Ensures and enhances facility, safety, and regulatory outcomes
including Joint Commission, CMS, National Patient Safety Goals and
compliance to Restraint/Seclusion policies and procedures.
- Completes all mandatory training/education/competencies
required for job classification, along with TB testing.
- Demonstrates knowledge of chain of command process and

- Education / Training:
- Bachelor's degree in nursing required, master's degree
preferred. Completion of a Nurse Executive Council approved
leadership development educational program.
- Work Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of clinical nursing experience.
- Minimum of one year of formal nursing leadership experience
required for external applicants
- Minimum of 2 years demonstrated informal leadership experience
required for internal applicants, may include but are not limited
to: Charge Lead Nurse, Charge Nurse responsibilities, leadership on
behalf of unit/site/system at Shared Governance Council, etc.
- Certification, Licensure, Registration:
- RN license in the State of Michigan. Nursing specialty
certification required within 2 years.

- Physical Effort:
- Strength-Position requires ability to frequently push/pull up
to 30 lb. objects with assist of others, occasional requires
ability to lift objects more than 50 lbs. with others, constantly
lift objects up to 20 lbs. And frequently lift up to 40 lbs.
- Manual Dexterity-Position requires incumbent to constantly
perform simple motor skills such as standing, walking and simple
manipulative skills such as writing. Position requires incumbent to
frequently perform moderately difficult manipulative skills such as
positioning patients.
- Coordination-Position requires incumbent to constantly perform
gross body coordination such as walking. Frequently perform tasks
which require hand-eye coordination such as assisting patients to
eat, collections of specimens for transport to lab and tasks which
require arm-hand steadiness such as taking patients temps and
pulses.
- Mobility-Positions requires incumbent to constantly walk and
stand; occasionally sit for prolonged periods, frequently bend such
as when caring for a patient in bed.
- Visual Discrimination-Positions requires incumbent to
constantly see objects far away as in driving and see close objects
such as reading thermometers.
- Hearing-Positions requires incumbent to constantly be able to
hear normal sound with some background noise as in answering
phone/intercom. Occasionally be able to distinguish sound as in
equipment alarms.
