  • Help and FAQ Job Summary Oversight for and manages the University of Michigan-Dearborn's comprehensive Hazardous Waste Management Program by offering expertise and knowledge for compliance with MIOSHA/OSHA regulations. Conducts inspections of laboratories and facilities to ensure compliance with health and safety regulation and procedures and provides training concerning hazardous waste. Performs emergency response related to hazardous waste.
    • Sample waste streams; review analytical results to determine proper DOT shipping name and disposal methods; and maintain analytical laboratory documents/records of proper paperwork.
    • Conduct required environmental inspections in accordance with applicable rules and regulations such as but not limited to hazardous waste storage and SPCC/PIPP.
    • Manage annual inspections, as required for SWPPP/ NPDES programs
    • Research and document regulatory requirements (primarily EGLE, EPA, DOT, etc.) and develop written procedures at the request of the EHS Director.
    • Develop environmental compliance-related written standard operating procedures, as needed.
    • Act as the lead for Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control (SESC), inspections, as needed. Training
      • Develop and conduct environmental, health and safety training including but not limited to MIOSHA/OSHA, EPA/EGLE, and DOT in accordance with regulations and university policy.
      • Maintain documentation of training provided including handouts, sign-in sheets, etc.
      • Create guidance for Permitted Equipment training/documentation and permits issuing (i.e., aerial lifts, powered industrial trucks). Health & Safety
        • Research MIOSHA regulatory requirements and develop written procedures at the request of the EHS Director.
        • Conduct and document periodic safety inspections of laboratories and machine shops; provide recommendations on corrective measures.
        • Maintain information to document laboratory safety inspection status to include lab compliance status.
        • Develop written guidance for use in monitoring and documenting required annual medical surveillance, including respirator fit testing and respirator medical questionnaires.
        • Ensure that personal protective equipment and other safety devices are utilized properly.
        • Conduct periodic food safety audits for the university's food service areas.
        • Review contractor health and safety programs, including occasional crane lift job safety plans. Emergency Response
          • Respond to campus emergencies such as hazardous materials, non-hazardous materials leaks, spills, and releases at the Hazardous Materials Specialist Level.
          • Provide and maintain written documentation and records of such incidents. Projects
            • Represent the EHS Department in attending, monitoring, documenting and, advising and assisting in all routine/non-routine Discovery Meetings concerning environmental, health & safety issues.
            • Assist in providing guidance for EPA, DEQ, OSHA, MIOSHA, DOT and other regulations as they apply to events as offered on campus. Provide written reports and recommendations.
            • Monitor and maintain adequate safety, emergency response supplies and containers.
            • Ensure that accident prevention techniques and standard operating procedures, and response protocols are observed and followed. Required Qualifications* Bachelor's degree in engineering, industrial hygiene, environmental, chemistry or other related field preferred or equivalent certifications and experience. Experience as a trainer in various EHS areas - EPA, OSHA, DOT, and First Aid & CPR. Minimum of 5-10 years of experience in occupational health & safety and environmental. Certified EGLE licensed Storm Water Operator (industrial and construction). Excellent oral and written communication skills. Experienced in public speaking and training. Ability to handle multiple tasks, organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines, yet remain flexible and able to respond when necessary. Knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint computer applications. Ability to work within diverse groups. Ability to respond to emergencies in a calm and professional manner.
