This is a new opportunity to impact the direction of Fords autonomous vehicle efforts leading our AV systems engineering and supporting Ford's shared transportation businesses.About the JobThe Ford Next AV Chief Engineer will lead Vehicle Development and Learning to support AV Business needs. This includes full vehicle engineering, development/engineering signoff; Leading all external PD resources that support AV development efforts; Leading vehicle engineering guidance to pre-program efforts and collaborate with AV Product Planning team.This Leader will lead an indirect team of 25+, driving Core Skill Teams in a matrix format. They will supervise diverse individuals with the team size often varying based on the project and critical multi-functional collaborators required for execution. This model enables flexibility and scale across common disciplines and skills. This role reports to John Davis ( , Director, Vehicle & Product Engineering for Ford Next LLC. John reports to Franck Louis-Victor, Ford Corporate VP of New Businesses and CEO of Ford Next.The AV Chief Engineer will lead in a sophisticated technical environment with multiple cross-functional partners, leading a team of resources to assess and mitigate risks, address a mix of vehicle hardware and software integration and deployment issues, champion decisions, and provide final vehicle level engineering sign-off responsibility. They will collaborate closely with an existing Systems Eng. team, providing specific AV systems and integration technical knowledge. Goals for this leader include ensuring on-time delivery of AV vehicles deployed at or below budget, launching Fords first fully driverless AV units in commercial operation with one or more SDS providers, and enabling key business and customer education across multiple form factors and demand partners.Responsibilities

  • Delivery all critical eng. milestones on time while meeting engineering budget and cost requirements to support business objectives
  • Leading Hardware & Software integration across Ford & Argo Eng. Teams, as well as other SDS providers aligned to additional development projects
  • Ensuring execution of on-vehicle design and development align to Product Management, Experience Design and Business requirements
  • Driving the build and delivery of all AV prototype and development builds
  • Leading eng. integration of any unique AV demand partner requirements for in-vehicle content for both moving goods and moving people; supervising delivery of Purchased Service engineering efforts
  • Leading ongoing eng. and in-field quality issue containment/resolution for AV test vehicles in development as well as vehicles used in all business/commercial pilots to enable high up time and customer experience
  • Leading engineering input on pre-program efforts for a future production vehicle with AV Product Planning
  • Operate as key eng. leader and collaborate with Argo AI and other SDS partners
  • Co-leading eng. governance process with SDS eng. counterparts, including vehicle change control and key integration decisions in collaboration with the AV Systems Eng. team
  • Providing eng. guidance to Ford Next/Ford Drive business planning, product and service cycle plan, and budgeting
  • Leading vehicle and AV testing/development and metric/OKR reporting for monthly Business Unit Updates, and related internal business unit reviewsThe position is based in SE Michigan, with relocation provided, as appropriate. The position will require approximately> 10% travel. Hybrid is the current operating pattern until we broadly progress to a more significant on-site work schedule; expected to spend 25-50% of time on site at Ford facilities, or direct Ford supplier sites.Basic Qualifications:
    • Bachelors degree in Systems, Mechanical, Industrial or Computer Engineering, or related field
    • 10+ yrs proven experience in automotive vehicle or sophisticated product engineering leadership role, including systems design, hardware or software integration, product architecture/design
    • 7+ yrs of product delivery, concept through launch, and in-market quality deliveryPreferred Qualifications:
      • Advanced technical degree or MBA in an appropriate field of study
      • Experience with automotive systems and vehicle design
      • Experience with vehicle platforms (chassis, propulsion, electrical and underbody systems), tophat (body exterior, structure, interior systems) development.
      • Experience with product prototyping, testing, validation and production
      • Ability to handle complex problems, mange across multiple skill team and satisfy customers with creative and sophisticated approaches
      • Ability to multi-task and drive parallel projects and distributed, matrixed resources with bold timelines and budget
